Why you keep sending me Email?!?!?!
  • 03
Happened a few years ago, and was very frustrating. Out of the blue, I get this email from some internet company in the US (I don't even live in that country) thanking me for signing up with them. I think they were called Centurylink, or something. Anyway, they don't exist in my country.

Needless to say, I didn't sign up with them, so I helpfully replied and said my name isn't Douglas, and they have the wrong email. And figured that would solve it. Nope. They kept sending me emails meant for this Douglas dude. They 100% ignored

any communication from me multiple times telling them they have the wrong email. I eventually looked up their website, clicked on their chat link, and spent the better part of 2 hours out of my life that I'll never get back telling them that they have the wrong email. They said they couldn't remove the

email without the customer's permission, due to "security" reasons. But they're quite okay sending me their customer's information in their emails. I pointed that out to them, and they said that's all right, because they don't send sensitive information via email. So.... in other words, these people were quite

okay with continuing to send me someone else's emails. They had zero interest in fixing it. So I let that stew for a while, and one day I get yet another email from these people. I glanced at it. It was confirmation for an appointment for their techs to come out and do

something, I forget what. I was about to delete the email, when I noticed a little link that said if I wanted to cancel the appointment, click here. All righty, then! Time for some petty revenge! I cancelled the appointment. I chuckled to myself thinking of Douglas taking time off work or whatever out of

his day to be home for that appointment that never occurred.. And I pictured him calling the company and yelling at them for not showing up, and the company telling him that he cancelled the appointment himself from the email they sent. Anyway, shortly after that, no more emails from these people. So, win, I guess.

toolah1511 10 hr. ago I had emails from VW Australia (I live in the UK) offering free collection and delivery of my car for a service. 5 emails telling them they had the wrong emai address totally ignored. So I booked the collection and delivery with an address in the UK. Got a snotty email back, but the emails stopped after that.

clearly been added in error, and would they please stop sending me their emails, since I had no connection with their organization. No luck. They kept on coming. Finally I sent a profanity laden screed demanding they stop.

Got an irate reply stating that my language was inappropriate for their list. Told them if they took me off the list, they wouldn't have to read it. Finally got it stopped.

SmartyMcPants4Life 3 hr. ago I had almost an identical thing happen with a catholic. school in the UK. I replied I was in the US and they had the wrong address. After a few emails I replied to everyone and let them know I'm atheist and would love to start sharing my views with them.

I got a very polite and apologetic email and never heard from them again.

shemjaza 9 hr. ago I kept getting "scam" emails about my student loans... which is weird as an Australian who's never studied in the US. Then, I noticed that the date countdowns and amounts were consistent, so I did a little

research on the loan company, and it was real. I got them to believe that they had the wrong address and they decided to call or physically mail the American guy with my name. I still get mail about his veteran benefits and his new Jeep.

Miserable-md · 10 hr. ago I heard a similar story but it was a travel company I don't know why is it so hard to call the phone number they have and confirm the email

OatmealSavage OP 10 hr. ago I know, right... Most companies I'm aware of will send an email to ask you to confirm your email address by clicking on a link in that email. But not these guys, I guess. Surprising, they being an internet tech company. You'd think they'd be up on this sort of stuff.

justaman_097 · 9 hr. ago Well played! The person who was inconvenienced in the cancellation was the idiot who gave them your email by mistake. Nicely done.

Jettcat- 3 hr. ago • Someone in Australia signed up for Uber account using my email address. After several attempts to bring this to the attention of Uber and a ton of emails from trips and ubereats. I logged in and reset the password to "use your own email address" and cancelled the account. Not a peep since.

elinchgo 4 hr. ago I have an email address that is easy to mix up. I've received airline boarding passes for a professor in Africa (I'm in the U.S.) a grandma getting her daughter's travel arrangements, and a college student's class lists. I've contacted them all and they were grateful for me letting them know about the mixup.

1P 5 OatmealSavage OP · 8 hr. ago You may be missing the point. It wasn't a "bother". I was actually attempting to be helpful by letting them know that they had the wrong email and I assumed that both they and their actual customer would appreciate it,

and thank me for correcting the mistake. I didn't expect the company to basically not care.. hence I took the petty revenge opportunity when it presented itself. Which apparently wound up achieving the original goal.
